W1 — Standard Bend with a Softer response

The Genesis W1 is a wooden-core stick for younger players starting hockey and learning core skills with a soft, forgiving response.

Why choose the W1?

Choose this stick when manageability, touch and confidence with the basics matter most. It is deliberately not positioned as a stepping stone that becomes 'worse' once a player improves.

Standard Bend / shape

Standard Bend is Mercian's straighter, conventional route for core skills. The W1 uses a 22 mm Standard Bend, keeping the shape straightforward for passing, receiving, carrying and striking fundamentals.

Softer response

The W1 sits in Mercian's Softer response band. Its wooden core with fibreglass wrap is intended to give a forgiving feel rather than maximum stiffness.

Construction, touch and control

  • Wooden core: provides the soft base feel.
  • Fibreglass wrap: adds reinforcement while retaining a forgiving response.

These features help explain the finished stick. They do not replace the more important bend and response decisions.

When another current option may suit better

Compare W1+ if you want a reinforced wooden-core construction or FG100 if you want a fibreglass composite route. All are valid softer-response choices for different construction preferences.

Sizes

The current product is configured in 22", 24", 26", 28", 30" and 32". Live availability is shown above.

OUTDOOR STICK GUIDANCE

Check the player requirement before you buy.

Outdoor choice starts with fit and the hockey you actually play. Bend, shape and construction should explain a useful difference, not create a good-better-best ladder.

Is the length workable? What hockey must it support? Would a specialist shape help the way you play? Which response can the player use?

Position, player level and carbon percentage can help describe a stick, but none of them automatically decides what suits you.
